What is therapeutic parenting?

Therapeutic parenting is a research-based approach to helping children who have experienced early trauma. The aim is to build feelings of safety and connection, so the child or young person can begin to deal with their experiences. We understand that this kind of 'special parenting' can be difficult.

Being a parent or carer is hard at the best of times. Caring for a child with complex needs can leave you feeling lost and unable to understand or connect with your child – while also carrying stress from your own life.

Parenting problems often arise when reality doesn't match expectations. Parents and carers usually do their best to live with the problems until they become unbearable, and everything can start to feel hopeless.

How consultations help

Consultations give you the chance to make sense of your relationship and acknowledge the difficulties without blame or shame, while growing your understanding of therapeutic parenting. Sessions help you put therapeutic parenting into practice at home and give you a space to reflect and offload.

Sessions draw on PACE: Playfulness, Acceptance, Curiosity and Empathy.

Children's Therapy Services is an approved Adoption & Special Guardianship Support Fund (ASGSF) provider, so this service may be funded for eligible adopted children and children under a special guardianship order. Read about the Adoption Support Fund.
